William F

Buckley. Paleolithic spokesman for conservatives:

Though liberals do a great deal of talking about hearing other points of view, it sometimes shocks them to learn that there are other points of view.

From his book “Up From Liberalism”, 1959(!). And another1:

More people die every year as a result of the war against drugs than die from what we call, generically, overdosing.

However.

In spite of Buckley’s brilliance, his personality, his presence is also an iconic representation of how most people think of conservatives. And not in a good way… Curiously, he is quoted as saying “Everything I do and say and the way I do and say it annoys me.”.

Finding this was inspired by an awesome post (on the “The Most Spectacularly Wrong Book Ever Written”). It also includes a link to Driscoll’s interview of Jonathan Last. And it was all started by a post at Ace’s place.

Footnotes below the fold.

  1. for Ann Coulter, who is mostly just a social conservative, ie, willing to use government impose other norms, her norms, than get government out of people’s lives in general.
