The direct translation of the Danish title of CS Lewis’ “The Screwtape Letters“. From a post at Uriasposten which is based on an essay from a Danish parish priest, Merete Bøye in the Danish newspaper, the Christian Daily (ie, Kristeligt Dagblad). The reason this was so much fun is that I didn’t know much about CS Lewis and I certainly didn’t how perceptive he was already back in 1942, when The Screwtape Letters were published (original Danish texts below the fold).
For example, from the article, Ms Bøye uses the Danish version of a Lewis quote to set up her piece – a quote that I eventually actually found in the original English.
What we want, if men become Christians at all, is to keep them in the state of mind I call ‘Christianity And’. You know—Christianity and the Crisis, Christianity and the New Psychology, Christianity and the New Order, Christianity and Faith Healing, Christianity and Psychical Research, Christianity and Vegetarianism, Christianity and Spelling Reform. If they must be Christians let them at least be Christians with a difference. Substitute for the faith itself some Fashion with a Christian colouring.
Geez, this perceptive already back in the 40s. She continues:
It is not good enough to just be a Christian; no, one must also make a difference in the world and nowadays this effort is called Christianity and the Refugee.
The original article is about Christianity in Germany and German churches, but the problems discussed are pan-European. Indeed, the so-called mainline churches here in the US are experiencing the same problems and for the very same reasons.
Members are leaving the German church faster than water though a sieve. To fix this, the church is quite clear about communicating that international socialism saves the soul. Does it work? Well, it depends. Perhaps the means by which the pews are filled is via self-righteous political slogans. But good luck with that, it is not Christianity. It is Christianity and Left-wing Populism and so Screwtape gets a big laugh from hell.
It is a small bit of synchronicity that over the last 24 hours Schlichter has been fighting the very same battle with various American Christian Leftists on Twitter.
