US Homicide Rates Over Time

I saw this first a couple of weeks ago, but it was one of those maybe-a-little-too-good-to-be-true things; however, a reposting at Powerline stated that most of the numbers have been verified, so:

The left axis is homicides per 100,000 Americans

Does kind of lend credence tho’ to the notion that perhaps anti-”drug” laws are counter-productive. Could it be possible that the number of lives (of junkies) saved is counterbalanced by the number of lives (of “drug” dealers) lost?

NB I’d like to know the meaning of those “union-led gun control laws enacted” from around 1905.
