American Pictures

When I originally went to Denmark back in the 70s, one of the crosses I had to bear as an American, was the book “American Pictures” [Amerikanske Billeder] by Jacob Holdt. For some reason, I have this notion that he even showed up at our school to spread his propaganda of “white guilt”.

Turns out he’s a fraud. The following a translation from a post at Uriasposten that discusses this [original Danish below the fold]:

Jakob Holdt admits the truth: it was the times, the Left way overdramatized

If you went to high school in Denmark in the 80s, you would’ve eventually encountered the presentation, “American Pictures”. Anti-racist propaganda by Jacob Holdt, who was, among other things, paid by a KGB agent that wanted the book about the racist USA sent to [Danish] opinion-makers. I met him coincidentally in 2008 in connection with a show in Gellerup at which there were assertions how of the modern-day Ku Klux Klan is echoed in the Danish People’s Party, that Islamophobia is a “sick Danish preoccupation”, and so on and so forth.

The reactionary blogger, Martin Kasler, has dug around in the book, American Pictures, and quietly pointed out that many important details cannot be true. The newspaper, Information, refused to publish his essay, but the documentation got out anyway. Holdt defends himself today as having been a “revolutionary journalist” who didn’t limit himself to facts, sources, and footnotes. His homepage, however, still bears the name “American Pictures: a documentary on racism and oppression”.

NB, Martin Kasler’s website has much more and some of it is in English.
