An Explanation

The very same filmmaker that made two of my favorite films (Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs) has made another. This is the very same filmmaker who made one of my most un-favorite films, well, two, Kill Bill 1 & 2. How to explain this…

In a review of Tarantinos newest film, Inglorious Basterds, (which sounds just as interesting as the Kill Bills), Ed Morrissey make the comment:

There’s almost no sport in it, no cleverness, and none of the wit that made Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction so compelling. In both, Tarantino made us care about what happened to otherwise despicable people.

That’s a fine explanation. I’m not sure it’s the whole explanation for me, but this one covers a lot of ground. The “vengeance porn” angle is also worth mentioning because that can was first opened in a big way in the Kill Bill films.

BTW, thanks, Ed, now I don’t need to see this.

I’ve also been left with less than inspiration for this movie. You hit the main topics for me. Lack of caring about the characters, gratuitous violence (for characters I don’t care about), excessive length, multiple referrals to previous movies and movie genres. I’m left with a meh for motivation.
Maybe watch the way we did the Kill Bill ,movies, but that time might be better spent doing something else.
Too bad

Very true, young man.

Don’t forget the other thing we figured out – dialogue. I don’t know anything about the dialogue in this new one, but the dialogue in RD and PF was good enough to taste (“Normally, both your asses would be dead as fucking fried chicken, but you happen to pull this shit while I’m in a transitional period so I don’t wanna kill you, I wanna help you. But I can’t give you this case, it don’t belong to me. Besides, I’ve already been through too much shit this morning over this case to hand it over to your dumb ass.” – mmm, tasty). More here.
